Today, Dec. 1, 2008, marks the 20th time the world has commemorated the annual World AIDS Day. Initiated by the World Health Organization, World AIDS Day provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.
Consider these startling facts:
As of 2007, a total of 33.2 million people have HIV.
2.5 million of these cases are children.
In 2007 alone, there were 2.5 million new HIV cases.
Around half of those with HIV get infected before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.
In the US, it costs on the average $618,900 to treat HIV.
These facts remind us that HIV has not gone away, and that there are still many things that need to be done.
How should you celebrate World AIDS Day then? Have a check-up. Practice Safe Sex. Use condoms. If you're embarrassed to buy them from your local convenience store, buy condoms online. Help fight AIDS and HIV. Do your share.
